As manufacturers and consumers seek innovative alternatives to traditional packaging materials, molded fiber presents an opportunity to replace certain plastic packaging and food service items with renewable, fiber-based alternatives. This can create new demand for forest resources while supporting manufacturing innovation and economic growth. These products demonstrate how wood fiber can be transformed into high-value applications that meet evolving market needs.
About the Program
The Endowment supports efforts that advance innovative uses for wood fiber and strengthen emerging markets for fiber-based products. Through market development, entrepreneurship, and strategic investments, the program explores opportunities that create new demand for wood fiber while supporting forest-based economies.
One example is the Endowment’s combined programmatic and impact investment to help de-risk and scale Tanbark Molded Fiber Products. Our funding, alongside other investors and partners, is helping Tanbark develop Type 3 molded-fiber packaging solutions made from forest-derived fiber. This work supports expanded domestic manufacturing capacity, creates new markets for wood fiber and value-added forest products, and advances renewable alternatives to certain plastic packaging applications.
By supporting innovation and market development, the Endowment seeks to help manufacturers, landowners, and communities benefit from emerging opportunities in fiber-based manufacturing.
