Important Update: With uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, know that we at the Endowment remain focused on our long-term mission and our relationships with our partners and grantees.   We are following Center for Disease Control guidance to ensure the safety of our team members as well as that of those with whom we interact daily. Effective March 20, we opted to move to a full “work remotely” plan as there has been an uptick in confirmed cases in our local area. While we have canceled/postponed travel and are conducting more meetings via phone and video conference, we are working normal hours and are available via phone or email.  For our grantees, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding timelines, deliverables, or budgets on active grants. To our other partners, we know that this is a difficult time and understand that your work and workplace are likely experiencing major disruptions. Please let us know what we can do to help.

– The Endowment Team

We are a catalyst for innovation that invigorates forest-rich, rural communities by keeping working forests as forests for all of their environmental, societal, and economic benefits and values.

As the nation’s largest public charity dedicated to keeping our working forests working and ensuring their bounty for current and future generations, we deploy the creativity and power of markets to advance our mission.

Our Team

The Endowment’s small but dedicated staff brings a rich history and capacity to work effectively and efficiently with each other, our Board and our partners to do that which others can’t or won’t.

Grant RFPs

Our program partners come to us through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process. Sign up to receive email notifications here to ensure you don’t miss out on any RFP announcements.

Our Mission, History & Vision

Our Mission: The Endowment works collaboratively with partners in the public and private sectors to advance systemic, transformative and sustainable change for the health and vitality of the nation’s working forests and forest-reliant communities.

Our History: The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, Inc. is a not-for-profit public charity. It was established September 21, 2006, at the request of the governments of the United States and Canada in accordance with the terms of the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement between the two countries.

Our Vision: America’s forests are sustainably managed to meet broad societal objectives such as marketable products, clean waters, wildlife habitats and other ecological services while ensuring healthy and vibrant forest-reliant communities.

What We Do

State of America’s Forests

Supported by the Endowment and produced by Mila Alvarez, State of America’s Forests is an online multimedia guide that helps users explore the many benefits that forests provide, understand challenges facing this renewable resource, and learn about forest management and conservation. The guide includes modules that provide detailed information on forest benefits, threats, and stewardship. The interactive website provides information on fire; the role forests play in providing clean water; the threat of forest insects and diseases; invasive plants; invasive animals; and much more.
